Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco Style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a delicate clay figure of a highly stylized form with a heart-shaped face, a corpulent, hunched body, spindly cylindrical arms, and holding a vessel atop one shoulder. The overall surface is a deep red slip with some cream slip highlights including a necklace and a belt. The visible shoulder has the bubbled surface characteristic of West Mexican shaft tomb figures, and the hunchback is also a commonly depicted figure from this culture, which some scholars attribute to a particular form of tuberculosis. Of the many West Mexican shaft tomb figures I have seen, this is one of the most unique! Size: 4.75" L x 4.25" W x 6.5" H (12.1 cm x 10.8 cm x 16.5 cm).
