Rome, Julio-Claudian Period, 1st Century CE.
A magnificent Roman marble sarcophagus section with carved head of Sol centrally placed, with a laurel wreath draped beneath her face. Top and side beams frame the face and laurels. Marble is textured due to the drilling technique used by the artist . Wreath is life-like with leaves overlapping each other, their branches bound at 5, 6, and 7 o'clock. A superb example. 31"L x 20"H. This piece was offered for sale at a Colorado Gallery on Live Auctioneers for $15,000.00 starting bid Jun 13, 2013. We are offering it at a huge discount. Be advised this piece is heavy, over 200 lbs. and will require crating, shipping will be expensive. We can also have a custom steel stand made for this piece for you at an additional cost.
