First half 19th century, each framed, the first embroidered with the alphabet, a scene of a house and animals in a pasture and a religious poem: ''Jesus permit thy gracious name / to stand as the first effort of / a youthful hand and while her / fingers on the canvas move, / enable her tender heart to seek / thy love with thy dear children / let her have a part and write / thy name thyself upon her heart''; the second embroidered with the alphabet and the Howe family register, signed ''wrought by Jane M.
