Lewis, Silas Weir (Philadelphia, 1819-1888), China Trade Archive, comprising 1) Manuscript log book as supercargo documenting his first voyage from Philadelphia to Canton in 1836 on the ship Plymouth, 75 pages, and return from Canton to Philadelphia, 1837, 75 pages, bound with his log on the ship Commerce 1837-1858, 57 pages, and from Canton to Philadelphia, 1838, 52 pages, square 8VO, half calf and marble boards, bookseller's tag by Clark & Raser 60 Dock Street; 2) His account book from Philadelphia to Canton, 1836, approximately 80 pages, detailing his purchases in Canton and his dealings in tea, cochineal, silk, etc with various Chinese trading houses including Saoqua, Gowqua, Cheongsoon, Cheepqua, Yetuck, Tingqua; 3) "Order Book No 2", approximately 100 pages, detailing the transactions in 1839 Voyage in Canton, 1839 as supercargo on the ship Levant of Philadelphia with his ownership stamp "Property of S. Weir Lewis", with fair copies of letters and documents detailing consignments of goods and specie by Philadelphia individuals and companies to be sold in China and goods to be purchased for import to US with those funds; 4) A signed note by Cheongsoon talking about the future delivery of Pekoe tea; 5) a two page letter to S. Weir Lewis from his brother Edwin Lewis January 12, 1833, writing from Canton talking of Chinese capital punishment, life in Canton and polygamy of the linguist "Old Tom"; 6) Business card of F. Mortimer Lewis in English and Chinese; 7) An executed partially printed receipt May 1839, Philadelphia, for goods shipped to Canton on the ship Levant; 8) A single issue of "Canton General Price Current/Mercantile Register and Shipping List” August 21, 1838, four pages split at the folds; 9) Order for ship stores from island of Lombock on way to China written in Malay with stylus on wood, 1" h x 10" w; 10) Group of 13 business cards/receipts/New Years cards/visiting cards for various Chinese merchant traders and notables including Kouqua, Kwashing, Akong, Mingqua, Saoqua, Moushing 9.5” x 4.5” on red paper; 11) One complete and two partial Chinese primers, one with manuscript translations into English; 12) Three pages double column manuscript with Chinese word, English translation and Chinese ideogram, approximately 7" x 6.5"; 13) Manuscript receipt with woodblock marked "Ship Boat Check 4 Cases Silk"; 14) Contemporary ink manuscript on onion skin with a drawing of how to use chopsticks; 15) Later copy photograph of S. Weir Lewis at the age of approximately 40; 16) Two loose sheets, one signed and dated 1833, one with his ideogram and chop; 17) Woodblock printed directions single sheet for using an abacus splitting at folds 9" x 9"; 18) Woodblock printed prayer broadside on orange paper with a manuscript note by Lewis verso saying a prayer for health and prosperity posted in front of joss 18" h x 9" w, some splits; together with 3 books from his library bearing ownership stamp and Chinese seal, including The Porcelain Tower, Philadelphia, 1842
