Art Deco
The epoch’s term Art Deco was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which took place in Paris in 1925. Even before the First World War a reorientation of Fine and Applied Arts took place, after Art Nouveau had increasingly lost importance. Until the beginning of World War II, artists and designers created furniture, glassware, ceramics and jewelry in the emerging style of Art Deco, but also produced commodities, built statues in new shapes and bright colors with a stylized decor. The inspiration came from different directions, for example, stimulation came from Léon Bakst's costumes and stage designs for the Ballets Russes, but Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Abstract Art also played formative roles. In the early 20s ancient Egyptian and pre-Columbian influences were also added. All these diverse tendencies led to significant stylistic changes. The round, oval or spiral design vocabulary with romantic floral motifs, which was preferred before 1930, was replaced by an increasingly geometric and streamlined design.
