Description
Early Calcutta fly rod with the Eggleston patented spring reel seat, fully marked "C.F.Orvis / Maker / Manchester VT" in 3 lines, with "Patented / June 6th / 1882" below the fulcrum of the spring seat. Additionally, the butt cap is stamped "C.F.Orvis / Maker / Manchester, VT" in 3 horizontal lines. The rod is serial number 124 as noted in several places on the reel seat and bands, with one band marked 181. This does not appear to be a replaced band, and is possibly a factory error. Grip is corded black, with reel seat mounted at the forward end of the grip, more suited to trolling or bait casting, and the wraps are red silk. Tip is 4 inches short. Well worn canvas bag and original square wooden outer case with brass latch. From the Thomas C. Kerr collection of Historic 19th century fishing rods.
