Description
A 33" x 24" framed yellow scarf with Sir Izaak Walton as its focal point depicted within an elaborate, central cartouche. The illustrations as a whole are reminiscent of fine, copperplate engraving. Walton is surrounded by fishing vignettes: Classical urns, fishing nets, bucolic scenes and natural forms. A copy of his most famous work, The Complete Angler (first published 1653 and third most popular book in English, after the Bible and Shakespeare) features center bottom. The words "The Angler's Companion" are inscribed along the bottom border, flanked by 8 bars of The Angler's Song.
Side and top borders list categories of flies ; pastes; worms; fishes and insects, with examples of each. Under Flies is written: "No 2 Green Drake found among stones by the River side from May to Midsummer." Most prominent are drawings of 14 named fish species, each with information about habitat and bait. "Roach May to Novr. In Sandy Bottom Deep Rivers at Shop Sterns, all Day ..."
A highly decorative and descriptive scarf in Very Good plus condition.
