ATTRIBUTED TO JULIUS CAESAR IBBETSON (ENGLISH, 1759-1817)Two views of Scarborough Castle, Yorkshire: The Main Gateway with numerous figures and The Keep with tourists and a soldier.
Oil on canvas (2)Julius Caesar Ibbetson painted in oils and watercolours. He painted portraits and coastal scenes but is known primarily for his rustic landscapes which show the influence of the Dutch painters of the seventeenth-century. He was born in Leeds, and was apprenticed to John Fletcher, a ship painter from Hull. He moved to London in 1777 where he worked in the studio of a picture restorer. He accompanied Colonel Cathcart on his journey to Peking (Beijing), making many watercolours of animals and plants. In 1789 he was in Wales, painting industrial landscapes. In 1790 he visited The Isle of Wight. He was commissioned by the Earl of Mansfield to decorate the rooms at Kenwood House, North London. He worked in Liverpool and The Lake District. He moved to Masham, North Yorkshire in 1805 and remained there for the rest of his life. He exhibited 81 works at The Royal Academy and 6 at The British Institution.Works by Ibbetson can be seen at the National Gallery of Ireland, the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the Leeds City Art Gallery.Worldwide shipping available.
