Provenance: Collection of Thomas James Barratt
Sold Christie's, 11th May 1916 Lot 261(2) 7 gns (£7.7s)Clarkson Frederick Stanfield was born in Sunderland. His father, James Stanfield (1749-1824) was from Ireland. Clarkson went to sea in 1808 and continued in service until 1814. He commenced his artistic career as a scene painter, firstly at the East London Theatre, later the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. He was considered to be the foremost theatrical painter of the age. He commenced his easel paintings in the early 1820s. He painted landscapes but the main body of his work was marine paintings. Ruskin compared his work favourably with that of Turner. Some of these marine scenes were painted on a grand scale, for example his Battle of Trafalgar (United Services Club, London). In 1832 he was commissioned by King William IV to paint two large works, Portsmouth Harbour and The opening of new London bridge. This commission greatly established his reputation. He became a member of The Royal Academy in 1832. He was a close friend of Charles Dickens. He painted in oil and watercolour. He exhibited 135 works at The Royal Academy and 22 at The British Institution.Works by Stanfield can be seen at the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate Gallery, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.Thomas James Barratt (1841-1914) was the Chairman of Pears Soap and was known as 'The Father of Modern Advertising'. His house in Hampstead, North London-Bellmoor, contained an important collection of paintings, including works by Sir Thomas Lawrence and John Constable. He used images of Victorian paintings to promote his products, most famously Sir John Everett Millais’s (1829-1896) picture entitled Bubbles. In 1892 he bought from Agnews one of the most famous images of the Victorian age-Sir Edwin Landseer's Monarch of the Glen. He paid £8,000 for this work, then a world record price.Worldwide shipping available.
