Description
Spanish Colonial, Guatemala, ca. 1700 CE. A carved and polychromed wooden bulto depicting a pair of Animas Solas (Lone Souls or Lonely Spirits), two dramatic depictions each representing a soul in purgatory on this bulto. La Anima Sola, for those unfamiliar, is a departed ancestral soul awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. La Anima Sola may be invoked when a family member or loved one dies in sin or conversely, to send an enemy to a state of temporary suffering or misery in purgatory. Size: 4.25" L x 5" W x 9.25" H (10.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 23.5 cm)
