Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1850 CE. An antique wooden santo figure, hand carved and painted, depicting a Christian saint dressed in voluminous white and dark blue/black robes, standing or perhaps floating upon a near-spherical orb. Both of his removable hands are missing, an unfortunate fate all too common for older Santos. Given his hairstyle, it is possible that this Santo represents Saint Francis of Assisi, one of the most popular saints in the Catholic canon, known for his love of animals and nature and his miraculous acts. A wonderful work of Mexican folk art. Size: 4" in diameter x 14.5" H (10.2 cm x 36.8 cm)
