GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1890-1978) "THE BLACK CLOAK" PORTRAIT PRINT, etching on paper, a crisply delineated depiction of a confident young woman (Mrs. Paul Mellon), reverse signed and dated in plate, as well as pencil signed and dated lower right margin. Matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Circa 1943. 9 7/8" x 7 7/8" plate, 16 1/2" x 20 3/4" OA.
Very good visual condition with minor scattered foxing/discoloration. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Property from the collection of Larry and Elizabeth Goldman, Smithfield and Monterey, VA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Birmingham, England, Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) studied at the Royal Academy in London, and went on to continue his training in Paris and Milan. On the Continent, Brockhurst was exposed to the portraits of iconic Renaissance artists such as Botticelli and Da Vinci, both of whose work would continue to exert an abiding influence on the Englishman's own art. Recognized early in life for his talent, Brockhurst went on to achieve great success as an etcher and a portrait painter for the era's elite. Brockhurst's portrait etchings continue to hold value as more and more collectors come to discover these richly textured, piercing compositions.
