GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1890-1978) "ANAIS NO. II" PORTRAIT PRINT, etching on paper, a half-length depiction of a smiling young woman (the artist's first wife, Anais Folin) in antique dress, she in partial profile with her face turned toward the viewer, from "Deaux Landaises", reverse signed in plate, as well as pencil signed lower right margin, later label attached verso noting "5th state", "Anais", and "W 67 / A54643", as well other indistinct numerical notations. Matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Circa 1923. 8 7/8" x 6 7/8" plate, 16 1/2" x 13 3/4" OA.
Good visual condition with even toning. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Property from the collection of Larry and Elizabeth Goldman, Smithfield and Monterey, VA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Birmingham, England, Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) studied at the Royal Academy in London, and went on to continue his training in Paris and Milan. On the Continent, Brockhurst was exposed to the portraits of iconic Renaissance artists such as Botticelli and Da Vinci, both of whose work would continue to exert an abiding influence on the Englishman's own art. Recognized early in life for his talent, Brockhurst went on to achieve great success as an etcher and a portrait painter for the era's elite. Brockhurst's portrait etchings continue to hold value as more and more collectors have come to discover these richly textured, piercing compositions.
