Description
Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River, early-mid 20th century CE. This is a heavy, hard wood gable mask decorated with organic and oil base paint. A gable mask was placed on the gable of a ceremonial house, sometimes woven into the very structure of the house. Scholars believe that they are the female personification of the house; in use, these items were decorated with perishable items like cassowary feathers. Size: 10" W x 30" H (25.4 cm x 76.2 cm)
