Description
Mexico, ca. early 20th century CE. A large hand carved and hand painted Mexican festival mask depicting a dramatic visage comprised of thick brows, huge saucer shaped eyes with eye slits above, a prominent hook nose, a pair of lozenge shaped motifs upon the cheeks, a wide, open mouth revealing a large tongue framed by a finely manicured mustache and jutting chin covered by a beard incised with Aztec-inspired designs. Black, red, and yellow pigments remain on the surface. A fabulous example of Mexican folk art, a tradition that celebrates the indigenous "Indios". Size: 9" W x 12.25" H (22.9 cm x 31.1 cm)
