“O.O. Howard” Union General Earned the Medal of Honor
OLIVER OTIS HOWARD (1830-1909). Civil War Union General who earned the Medal of Honor.
October 13, 1873-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, “O.O. Howard,” 1 page, measures 7.75” x 9.75”, Choice Very Fine. Letter written to Charles A Griswold who was a surgeon with the 93rd Illinois Infantry. Signed by Howard as President of Howard University. Light age toning and rough edges, nice fine condition.
OLIVER OTIS HOWARD (1830-1909). As a brigade Commander in the Army of the Potomac, Howard lost his right arm while leading his men against Confederate forces at Fair Oaks in June 1862, an action which later earned him the Medal of Honor. He also led his men at Gettysburg in defense of Cemetery Hill and against Picketts Charge.
He was a major figure in the Reconstruction, serving as Commissioner of the Freedman's Bureau from 1865 to 1873, during which time he founded Howard University. He then served in the West in the Indian Wars, most notably his campaign against the Nez Pierce led by Chief Joseph. He also served as superintendent of West Point Military Academy.
