Rare 1903 original Rookwood oil lamp complete with matching ceramic oil font and matching glass shade. Thistles start at the bottom of the vase and come up each side, carved and hand colored in shades of green and mauve by Rose Fechheimer. The shade, one of only a handful to ever become available is a bit of a mystery. In Rookwood's 1904 Mail Order Catalog are pictures of similar shades along with Tiffany Acorn shades on the lamps offered there but we have never been able to determine who made them. They are always in a frosted mat finish and always colored to match the ceramic portion, in this case capturing the subtle mauve of the thistles. Of the dozen or so shades we have seen there are solid green, red and blue ones but this being the only one in two colors. Marks include the company logo, shape number 652 Z which later became shape 1041 in the regular line and Ms. Fechheimer's full name in black slip. Total height is 24 3/4 inches. Height of the ceramic portion is 14 3/4 inches. Excellent original condition although converted to electric at some point.
