Description
Exceptional Rookwood Dull Finish ewer with rose decoration done in 1889 by Kataro Shirayamadani. An unusual shape, the handles form into lotus blossoms at the spout. Decoration is done in shades of rose, green and brown with excellent definition. A fine bit of fired on gold highlights the top edge of the spout. Marks include the Rookwood logo, which indicates the date, shape number 471 B, an impressed W for white clay, an incised S for Smear (Dull Finish) glaze and the incised cypher of the artist. Height 11 3/4 inches. Excellent condition with no crazing.
