HENRY SMITH(1803-1887) British naval officer. In August 1840 he made a decisive attack against the Chinese forces besieging Macao. In 1841 he was present at the reduction of Tycocktow, in the action with the Bogue forts, and at the taking of Canton and Amoy. As captain of HMS Volage, he ordered the first shots fired of the Opium War. Manuscript L.S. Captain of H.M.S. Ganges, 1p. legal folio, Cork, June 17, 1849 to Captain W. H.Hall, H.M. Steam Frigate Dragon ordering him to proceed to Belfast to receive "18 tons of Salt Meat" and thence to Limerick on a similar mission. Very good.
