Description
Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna: A Set of Russian Silver-Mounted Cut Glass Cosmetic Jars, F.E. Henrichsen, St Petersburg, circa 1880. Comprising five vessels: three circular bottles for perfumed talc or lotion, the silver screw-on lids lined with cork (the largest lacking the interior liner), an oval vessel with slip-on silver lid for cotton wool, and an oval bottle with locking hinged cover for toilet water or perfume. The vessels all of handblown, faceted cut glass, the silver covers engraved with the Imperial cypher MA beneath the Imperial crown. Height of tallest 3 ¾ in. (9.8 cm).Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna (1853-1920) was the only surviving daughter of Emperor Alexander II. She married Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1874. This ST Petersburg silversmith supplied the Russian Imperial court with a great deal of silver, most particularly the traveling vanity, cosmetics, and toiletry sets made for each of the Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses.
