Description
Bamileke people, African (Cameroon grasslands), 20th century. Hand carved and polychrome Babungu helmet or cap mask with eight removable pointed arrow tips (two missing) at top that fit in pierced holes on circular disc surmounting ten undulating tubular supports rising from figure's head with incised eyebrows, large almond shaped eyes, rounded protruding ears and pierced open mouth exposing teeth. Overall approximate height 20.5".Provenance: From the Private Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Calvin Wayne McLarin, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: This type of tribal mask was typically worn by the dancers of the Bamileke tribe during feasts and other celebrations.
