Description
MID-ATLANTIC DECORATED AND INCISED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, approximately half-gallon capacity, ovoid form with single incised shoulder ring, squared rim, and pronounced foot, brown-slip glazed interior, clamshell cut-off lines under base. Brushed cobalt horizontal floral decoration repeated three times around shoulder, with incised "E. A. Fulcher" below, lettering filled with cobalt. Possibly Keesey & Parr, Richmond, VA. Circa 1860. 6 3/4" H, 5 1/2" D rim.
Undamaged except for a sliver chip to underside edge of base.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: The decoration seen on this jar, while not unique, can be found on several signed Keesey and Parr, Richmond jars. E. A. Fulcher is most likely Edwin Anderson Fulcher (1839-1911) who was born in Henrico Co. just outside of Richmond. He is recorded in the 1860 Federal Census for the county as a huckster. Fulcher enlisted in Company A, Virginia 10th Cavalry Regiment on June 9, 1861. He rose in the ranks quickly being promoted January 1, 1862 to full 2nd Lieutenant and on August 8, 1863 to the full rank of Captain. A year later he married Emma A. Engelman in Augusta Co., VA. After the war Fulcher and his family settled in Augusta Co., likely at the homeplace of his wife's family. There he would farm and run a distillery. He acquired a distillery license in 1866 and was taxed for 97 gallons of whiskey the same year. In 1870 he employed two distillers and was again listed as operating a distillery in 1879/1880. In addition, Fulcher served as County Supervisor of his district and President of the Augusta Co. Board of Supervisors. He is buried at the Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, VA.
Undamaged except for a sliver chip to underside edge of base.
