Description
PAIR OF BALTIMORE FEDERAL CARVED AND INLAID SIDE CHAIRS, heart-and-shield back form, each featuring complex-inlaid pendant bellflowers and lower fan having sand-burnt shading, carved foliate devices, molded frame, and serpentine front seat rail, all raised on square-tapered front legs ending in spade feet and square swept rear legs joined with side, rear, and off-set medial stretcher, over-the-rail upholstered seats, old printed label for "C. F. Meislahn & Co. / Baltimore, MD" applied to rear rail, old accession number to reverse. Each retains an old surface with rich color. Circa 1810. Each 39" H, 18 1/2" x 20 1/2" seat.
Good overall condition with minor wear and cracks. Both with small losses to inlaid fan at base of back, one example with restoration to inlaid fan.
