Condition:
The painting is in good condition consistent with the age. The varnish has been darkened and there is single craquelure. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear as well as tears. The dimensions are 49 x 63.5 cm and the frame measures 67 x 81 cm.
Ludwig Dettmann (1865-1944)
The German painter and illustrator Ludwig Dettman was born in 1865 in Flensburg. He studied at the Berlin Art Academy and worked in his early career as an illustrator. Influenced by Max Liebermann, Dettman focused on landscape painting and was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession in 1898. In 1900, he became the director of the Academy of Königsberg. During the First World War, Dettmann was official war painter; afterwards he lived and worked in Berlin, where he died in 1944. (msc)
