This range finder camera was produced by Leica between 1971 and 1975, as a ‘Leica M5’ model. The Leica M series was and still is favored by many photographers to this date, especially for photo reportage. The original leather camera case with a later ‘Olympus’ strap are also part of the lot.

Condition:

The Leica M5 is in very good condition with slight signs of wear. The leather camera case equally shows some signs of wear. The camera is 8.5 cm tall, 15 cm wide and 3 cm deep. During inhouse testing the camera was fully functional, but there is no guarantee on functionality. (amb)

Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH / Leica Camera AG

The beginnings of the celebrated Leica products go back to the year 1849, when Carl Kellner founded the “Optical Institute” in Wetzlar. From this proceeded the “Ernst Leitz Works” in 1869 and later the Ernst Leitz GmbH under the direction of Ernst Leitz. At first, the works only produced microscopes; the film cameras followed around 1900. In 1913, the world’s first compact camera was created, dubbed the “proto-Leica” by Oskar Barnack. The camera, which was soon after produced as part of a series, was an unexpected success. After the Second World War, the firm was renamed the Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH. In 1986, this became three independent firms: Leica Camera AG, Leica Microsystems GmbH and Leica Geosystems AG. The Leica Camera AG moved from Wetzlar to Solms.
