Description
Back at auction due to fraudulent bidder from 6/2/2016 sale…
India, Gupta Period, ca. 320 to 550 CE. The Gupta Period is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Age", when the image of the Buddha that you are probably familiar with became set in stone (literally) through beautiful pieces of art like this one. This is a fragment of a larger terracotta sculpture that was probably removed from a temple wall by British colonizers during the 19th or early 20th centuries, when Indian Buddhist art became hugely fashionable in the West. The Buddha's face is beautifully carved, showing oversized eyes, a small mouth, and flowing lines to suggest eyebrows and a nose. He has elongated ears and a small urna, a dot placed on the forehead that symbolizes the third eye. Size: 4.5" L x 4" W x 4.5" H (11.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 11.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private NYC collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
