Description
Pre-Columbian, Nazca culture, Peru South Coast, ca. 100 to 400 CE. This is a beautiful bowl with an exterior painted in a deep orange on the rounded bottom (shaped not to sit on a flat surface, but to be placed in sand) and a dark red ring around the rim. The interior has a similar deep red ring that extends nearly to the base of of the bowl. In the base is a creamy white background with two figures placed in symmetry that appear to be whales or other sea creatures. One is black, the other bright orange. On the coast, the Nazca could easily have seen whales with some frequency, and their art is often inspired by animals they would have observed. Size: 7.15" W x 2.9" H (18.2 cm x 7.4 cm)
