Description
A very striking color lithograph by the well-listed British artist and satirical cartoonist, Ronald Searle (1920-2011). Searle's works, which have appeared in such publications as Life, The New Yorker, Holiday and The New York times, are quite collectible. As noted below, "Despite his skeptical, satirical bent, Mr. Searle had a soft spot for animals, especially cats. The subjects of his books 'Searle's Cats' (1967) and 'More Cats' (1975) were among his favorite creations." Indeed, as you can see, the subject of this piece -- which is entitled "The Coming of the Great Cat God," is a cat looming over Westminster as his human subjects flee. This color lithograph, which dates to 1968, is both signed and numbered in pencil. Specifically, it is number 87/95. This piece is framed and matted, with a plaque on the frame, indicating its title. The paper size is approximately 19 3/4" by 26 1/4," while the outer dimensions of the frame are approximately 25 1/4" by 31 1/2." As you can see, the image of the cat and its subjects is quite colorful and bright; however, there is some discoloration and soiling along the right and lower margins of the paper. While that isn't ideal, you have to remember that this piece is 46 years old and only one of 95, so there just aren't that many to go around. That said, if it bothers you, I think that most of it could be hidden with creative matting.
