Description
Group of six Civil War era albumen prints of Union generals and officers in uniform, attrib. C.C. Giers of Nashville, two with some hand-coloring including one of Brig. General Thomas H. Ruger, 1833-1907. Sizes range from 6-3/8" x 8-3/8" to 10-1/4" x 9". Also included is one photograph of city street scene with two cannon caissons and Union soldiers, 4-5/8" x 7", possibly Nashville. Note: German born Carl C. Giers began a photography business in Nashville in 1855. It later came to be known as Giers National Portrait Gallery. During Nashville's occupation by Union forces during the Civil War, he photographed soldiers on both sides of the conflict. He went on to serve in the Tennessee legislature following the war, and not long after his death in 1877, his son Otto Giers carried on the family name by entering the photography business. Condition
All with surface grime and some fading. Image of three seated officers has staining across center. Image of cannons has some tears.
