Autographed Civil War era Union officer CDV and 5 albumen officer prints, all attributed to C.C. Giers of Nashville. 1st item: Autographed Carte de Viste of Brig. General Thomas H. Ruger, 1833-1907, with Ruger's signature in ink on reverse. Stamped on back for Giers & Co., National Portrait Gallery, Nashville, Tenn. 4" x 2 3/8". 2nd-6th items: Four albumen prints of Union officers including Major General Lovell Harrison Rousseau (b. Kentucky, 1818-d. 1869) and one albumen print of a possibly Mexican War officer. Albumen prints mounted to cards ranging in size from 10" x 8" to 10 1/4" x 9". Note: German born Carl C. Giers began a photography business in Nashville in 1855. It later came to be known as Giers National Portrait Gallery. During Nashville's occupation by Union forces during the Civil War, he photographed soldiers on both sides of the conflict. He went on to serve in the Tennessee legislature following the war, and not long after his death in 1877, his son Otto Giers carried on the family name by entering the photography business.
