Description
Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "R", attributed to Wells & Richard, Reading, PA, circa 1845, ovoid pitcher with short collar and tooled rim, decorated around the midsection with a series of brushed tulips, above the inscription "R" or "Rea", presumably for Reading, Pennsylvania. Collar and spout decorated with swag motifs. Handle terminals decorated with cobalt highlights. Decoration, form, and color, are consistent with pieces bearing the scarce Reading, PA maker's mark, "WELLS & RICHARDS". Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignors' parents decades ago. Loss to rim. A shallow 1" glazed-over area to rim. Some surface lines to interior of collar, not visible on exterior. H 13 1/2".
