Description
Scarce Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "JCM", attributed to Daniel Seagle, Vale, NC, circa 1840, highly-ovoid jar with thin, flattened rim and arching lug handles, the surface covered in a streaky, olive-green alkaline glaze. Impressed on top of one handle with the mark, "J.CM", and on top of the opposite with a five-gallon capacity mark. As stated in the research of NC collectors and historians, Tom and Lana Kleeberg, pieces bearing a "J.CM" mark were made by Daniel Seagle for John Michal or his father, Johann Conrad Michal, who were members of a prominent Lincoln County, NC family, merchants, and associates of the Seagles. Two rim chips, each measuring approximately 1 3/8". Otherwise excellent condition. H 14 3/8".
