NE Arizona Apache tribe coiled rye Indian basket, leather laced on upper areas, alternating dark colored designs, originally donated to the Harvard University's Peabody Museum and later deaccessioned. Provenance - script written on leather band by the Harvard University's Peabody Museum, "APACHE S.W. ARIZONA, BUNDLED ROTTON (BOTTOM?) REPAIRED - 1892, OSIER RING AND BOTTOM COLERED (?) COILING BRAIN TAM RIM AND LACED CEREMONIAL OFFERING NOT ELSEWHERE FOUND, SEE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATIONAL HISTORY MANUAL 29.4, 11641 RAKE DESIGN DRAWER 42 SHELF 142". (Note - some of the numbers and wording were slightly illegible), 12 11/16" W x 3 5/8" H. Note - ALFRED VINCENT KIDDER & SAMUEL J. GUERNSEY were archeologists who worked for a few years in the Southwest, excavating the Betatakin site in Arizona, Guernsey discovered a whole cultural sequence that has become known as the Basket maker Culture. Condition - breaks to the bottom coiling, 1-2 inch rim loss, wear consistent with age.
