Description
NE Arizona Apache Indian tribe coiled rye basket, leather laced on rim, sides and bottom, alternating dark colors, originally donated to the Harvard University's Peabody Museum and later deaccessioned. Provenance - script written on leather band by the Harvard University's Peabody Museum "AMERICAN INDIAN DEPT, BRAIN TAN RIM & BOTTOM UNIVERSITY MUSEUM #142-B 18(67?) Note - ALFRED VINCENT KIDDER & SAMUEL J. GUERNSEY were archeologists, who worked together for a few years in the Southwest, excavating the Betatakin site in Arizona. Guernsey discovered a whole cultural sequence that has become known as the Basket maker Culture. Condition - 1/2" x 1" oval hole in bottom, wear consistent with age.
