Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A fine, large slip-painted terracotta vessel, of a round bottomed form with a flared rim, depicting a wide register that contains four large birds in profile painted in a polychrome scheme of red, chocolate brown, and white. In the Pre-Columbian world birds had a special symbolic value as the indigenous believed they were sky animals that also served as messengers between humanity and their deities. A lovely form with rich iconography, double perforations at one end once used for suspension. Size: 5.5" W x 4.125" H (14 cm x 10.5 cm)
