Mayan Jaina Polychrome Standing Dignitary Figure
Mayan Jaina Polychrome Standing Dignitary Figure
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Jaina Island Yucatan Mexico, 500 to 800 CE. This is a pottery standing dignitary figure who holds his hands together. He wears an ankle length skirt and a full body cap. Atop his head, he has a finely coiffed hairdo and wears large ear ornaments. Around his body, he wears a belt with a trophy head. There are traces of Maya blue pigments. These figures, from an island off the Yucatan peninsula, are noted for their lifelike faces and their immense detail. The clothing that this figure wears almost certainly copies the real clothing of a person in the Late Classic Maya period. These figures probably represent actual people and seem likely to have been produced in Campeche and brought to Jaina Island to be buried with the dead. Size: 3" W x 6" H (7.6 cm x 15.2 cm).

Provenance: Ex Dr.Stanley Boggs, Godfather of Maya Archeology (First person who excavated pyramids in Yucatan)
