History: The art of ornate napkin rings in mediums such as silver, silver plate, wood, and bone is largely an American tradition. The idea was that of moving away from the simplicity of typical napkin rings that served their purpose as markers for which napkins were to be washed and instead made the rings part of a larger work of art. They became a centerpiece unto themselves during the early 20th Century after their development in France during the 1800s.
