A Victorian 1847 pattern helmet to the North Somerset Yeomanry. Comes with wooden stand. The white metal skull with brass trim and embellished with brass decoration. These comprise of oak, laurel and acanthus sprays. The ornate frontal plate of Victorian crown over a rococo shield, this is mounted with a white metal star and central strap 'The North Somerset', enclosing the VR cypher. The shield with oak and laurel sprays. Brass foliate plume holder, base, and rose side ornaments, brass chin chain. Correct pattern white horse hair plume and original liner.

History: In 1847, the British dragoon and dragoon guard regiments adopted the "Albert pattern" helmet with falling plume, a design thatwas so successful that in modified form it continued in service as a full dress item for over a hundred years. A modified form of the helmet is still in use today by the Horse Guard. The history of the North Somerset Yeomanry started in 1798, when a Calvary troop was raised by James A Wickham at Frome and was known as the Frome and Selwood Volunteers. In 1817 it was renamed the North Somerset Yeomary Calvary. Following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, there was considerable unrest in the woolen mills and in 1822 the Frome Squadron was called out in aid of the Civil Power.
