This Essex crystal topped cane or walking stick has a reverse intaglio depiction of a dog's head. It is encased in a gilt brass. The wood appears to be an ebonized hardwood.

History: Beginning in 1860, the art of reverse intaglio designs were introduced to England by Thomas Cooke. The process involved the polishing of rock crystal into a cabochon design, painting the image in reverse on the flat edge, and backing it in gold foil or mother of pearl. The art remained popular for over sixty years.
