Description
Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 200 to 900 CE. A green-grey volcanic stone metate (metlatl) with sturdy tripod legs and a head that - combined with the stiff back - calls to mind a turtle or possibly a crocodile or alligator, this is a fine small artifact. Saurians are a common theme of metate, which may represent the surface of the earth and therefore agricultural fertility. Metate, a type of quern, are the Mesoamerican twist on a near-universal artifact of agricultural communities: the necessary tool for processing grain and seeds. The level of detail and the artistry required to carve this from a single piece of stone suggest that it was a valued object whose worth went beyond the utilitarian. Size: 14" L x 9.5" W x 3.8" H (35.6 cm x 24.1 cm x 9.7 cm)
