Description
Mid century Oil on Canvas "Le Canal" by French Artist Gabriel Marc Louis Ferro. A gray rainy day in a Paris suburb. The painting is circa 1945-1955. The painting still has the certificate and seal of acceptance on the back from The Salon d'Automne in Paris. In a magnificent French Carved Wood Frame. In Frame measures 29"x25.50" x 2.50". Stretcher measures 22"x19". Wt is 8 pds. PROVENANCE: From the Private Paris, France and Charleston SC Collection of J. Marterer, author of Paris 201, the Winner of the Benjamin Franklin Awards - GOLD MEDAL (Travel) and Independent Publisher Awards - SILVER MEDAL (Travel). Gabriel Marc Ferro was born in Paris in 1901. Gabriel Ferro attended the academies libres (free art schools) in Montparnasse. He exhibited in Paris, from 1942, at the Salon d'Automne, of which he was appointed a member that same year. He was also a member of the Salon des Artistes Independants and exhibited at the Salon des Peintres Temoins de leur Temps. Fittingly for a painter witnessing his age, his canvases bore out the wretchedness of desolate suburbs in the rain, miserable shacks weighed down by equally foreboding gray skies. These works, with downbeat titles like Fried Roach Fish, The Carpenter's House and The Garret, are nonetheless less penetrated by a singular beauty.
