Bernard Clavel was born in Lons-le-Saunier in 1923. Remarkably gifted, he began to write at the age of fifteen. He was an established author (1971 Goncourt Prize laureate) and self-taught artist who painted in his free time since his youth. He claimed he never travelled without his "little box of watercolors", which he described as a marvelous tool without which certain moments of pure joy would be lost forever. He exhibited eight of his compositions, some of them abstracts, at the 1953 Salon des Realités Nouvelles. His collected watercolors, predominantly landscapes, were exhibited in November 1986 at the Orangerie du Parc in Villeroy-Mennecy (Essonne).
