Description
[Slavery] Robert Boucher Nickolls. A LETTER TO THE TREASURER OF THE SOCIETY INSTITUTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF EFFECTING THE ABOLITION OF THE SLAVE TRADE.
Lon: James Phillips, 1787. 1st edition. Sabin 55238. Nickolls, describes himself as “…a native of the West Indies, though established in this country.” Nickolls argues in favor of prohibiting the importation of slaves. Doing so would benefit planters through an immediate increase in the value of their slaves (p15), and would benefit creditors by making the planters better able to repay their debts. Nickolls argues that the lifespan of slaves, and therefore the existing slave population, would naturally increase if they were treated less cruelly and if they had a more adequate diet.
16pp. Marbled paper wraps worn on surface. Title leaf has stain and ink number to its upper portion, no other markings, very good. .25
