Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean / Florida, Arawak People, Taino, ca. 15th century CE. A carved spoon made from some large piece of bone, with a monkey shaped handle and a relatively large bowl with incised carving that makes it look like a leaf. This spoon was made for the ritual ingestion of crushed drugs of some kind; Taino spirituality, which focused on the spirit of the ancestors and the god of the cassava, their primary crop, was mediated by a class of priests (bohiques), who often engaged in the taking of hallucinogenic drugs to aid in rituals and ceremonies. Size: 1.75" W x 4.35" H (4.4 cm x 11 cm)
