Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean / Florida, Taino people, ca. 15th century CE. A rare and interestingly-shaped pottery platter, clearly handmade, in a single color of fired red clay. The piece has the shape of an animal, perhaps a fish or some other sea creature. Taino pottery has often been found in grave contexts, so this may have once been a grave good. Taino society, a loose collection of chiefdoms, was composed of commoners, who were responsible for gathering and hunting food, and members of the nobility, who were artisans creating items like this one. Size: 9.8" L x 7.25" W x 2.2" H (24.9 cm x 18.4 cm x 5.6 cm)
