Description
Anti-Slavery Strawberry Lustre Pitcher. 4.5" tall lustre ware pitcher, produced in England, possibly for the American market, circa 1830-1840. One side depicts a shackled African man, sitting on the shoreline, while a ship flying the British flag appears on the horizon. It is captioned: "Am I Not A Man and A Brother" (the slogan of British anti-slavery societies). The other side has a poem castigating the slave dealer and calling upon him to explore his human feelings before criticizing the abolition movement. One tiny chip at rim with light soiling, easily bleached out.
