DUBUFFET JEAN: (1901-1985) French Painter and Sculptor, famous for founding the art movement Art Brut. A good T.L.S., Jean Dubuffet, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Paris), 19th August (1945), to [Anatole] Jakovsky, in French. Dubuffet announces 'Paul Budry is in Paris. Your articles reached him safely' and continues 'I am very interested by this new article about me on which you are working and very much looking forward to seeing it. I have received heaps of new documents for the ART BRUT. I am waiting for the end of the holidays to speak to Gallimard with Paulhan, show him all my files and arrange something specific….' The artist also reports that nobody is in Paris at the moment and that he will leave too if he obtains a circulation permit for his car, further concluding 'I am working assiduously on some paintings. I have not yet done the image for the postcards but I am thinking about it. Patience'. A good letter for its early reference to Art Brut. One small tear to the lower edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG

An important early reference to Art Brut. Dubuffet created the art movement which he labelled Art Brut at the end of World War II and in 1948, three years after the present letter, he formed the Compagnie de l'art brut along with other artists including Andre Breton. The collection contains thousands of works and is now housed in Lausanne, Switzerland.
