Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche III-IV, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A fine blackware stirrup vessel depicting a male figure at rest, seated and nestling his tired head upon his arms which are crossed over his upraised knees. His weary visage shows finely delineated features including heavy lidded sleepy eyes, a protruding bulbous nose, and closed lips that seem too exhausted to utter a word. He wears a large headwrap with a tail end that falls down his back, large round ear ornaments, and a blanket that is nicely decorated with impressed Andean geometric textile motifs draped around his shoulders. He also carries a bag, perhaps a coca bag, suspended over his left shoulder. A wonderful example that captures this gentle man in repose. Size: 7.5" L x 5" W x 7.25" H (19 cm x 12.7 cm x 18.4 cm)
