Woodland to Mississippian culture. Measures 4.5 x 5.5 inches. George Nichols collection.
Nichols' notes regarding site 2 read as follows, "Sulphur Spring Church site. Located in field on ridge ½ mile west of church."
From Wikipedia: "Sulphur Springs is an unincorporated community in eastern Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. It is located near Barnhart, bordering the banks of Glaize Creek and the Mississippi River."
An image of this example is included in "The Archaeology of Missouri, I," by Carl H. Chapman, Columbia, University of Missouri Press, 1975, p. 2113, and identified as a "Shaped mano from the Sedalia complex at the Pauling site (George Nichols Collection)."
