Ancient Near East, Phoenicia, ca. 600 BCE. A small pottery votive figure, a statue of a woman, probably the goddess Astarte, mold-made, with arms crossed over stomach; the woman is naked, with clear breasts and genitalia. Astarte, also known as Ishtar, is the name connected with the Phoenician worship of this eastern Mediterranean goddess of sex, fertility, and war. Small votive figures may have served as amulets or been placed as offerings inside of temples. Size: 1.75" W x 4.55" H (4.4 cm x 11.6 cm)
